Ascension has announced the publication of a new research study led by Cynthia LaFond, PhD, RN, CCRN, FAAN, Senior Director of Nursing Research at Ascension. The study explores how skin tone affects the prevalence and severity of pressure injuries in patients.

The research analyzed data from 55,658 patients worldwide to examine the relationship between patient skin tone and pressure injury outcomes. According to the findings, patients with medium-dark skin tones experienced higher rates of pressure injuries and were up to four times more likely to suffer from severe (higher-stage) injuries compared to those with light–medium skin tones.

"This research underscores the need to bridge healthcare gaps by integrating diverse skin tones into research, education and practice. Insights from this study could help inform more personalized and effective treatment approaches. Ascension will continue using this data to shape policies and practice standards that enhance care for all patients," according to the statement released by Ascension.

The article detailing these findings will be published in the November/December issue of Nursing Outlook.
