Ascension has released its 2025 Ministry in Action Report, detailing the health system’s activities over the past year. The report highlights that Ascension served more than 4.1 million people during fiscal year 2025 and provided $1.7 billion in care for individuals living in poverty and other community benefit programs. Additionally, the organization delivered $1.8 billion in unreimbursed care for Medicare patients.

The report notes that Ascension achieved its highest-ever Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Star Ratings, with a score of 3.48 compared to the national average of 3.13. Net Promoter Scores also reached record levels, reflecting improved patient satisfaction and experience.

“As the world of healthcare continues to evolve and grow, Ascension remains steadfast in our mission to serve those most in need,” said Joseph Impicciche, JD, MHA, Chief Executive Officer of Ascension. “We are committed to meeting our patients where they are outside our facility walls through all the Mission-driven initiatives and innovations outlined in this report. Above all, we are focused on people - our workforce, our patients and our communities.”

The organization advanced growth initiatives aimed at expanding access to care. In June, Ascension agreed to acquire AMSURG, a move expected to add more than 250 ambulatory surgery centers across 34 states after completion of the transaction. This acquisition is intended to increase outpatient services in areas such as gastroenterology, ophthalmology, and orthopedics.

The report also outlines steps taken by Ascension to improve its work environment and support employees by investing in technologies designed to reduce administrative tasks for clinicians and nurses.

“At Ascension, every decision starts with our Mission,” said Eduardo Conrado, President of Ascension. “We’re continuing to invest in our people, our facilities, and the technology that strengthens the connection between caregivers and patients. When we do that well, we not only improve the care experience but also build healthier, more resilient communities. This report reflects how we’re adapting and growing while staying true to who we are and why we serve.”

Other highlights from the report include a more than 20% reduction in mortality rates since 2021 through initiatives like Recognize and Rescue—preventing over 4,000 deaths—as well as increased digital engagement with over 420,000 patients using the Ascension One patient portal.

Ascension’s workforce now includes approximately 99,000 associates: among them are about 33,000 nurses; over 10,000 nursing support staff; more than 5,100 employed providers; around 22,300 independent providers; and over 1,100 resident physicians.

Through its Dispensary of Hope subsidiary—a nonprofit—24 Ascension Rx sites dispensed more than 71,000 free prescriptions during FY25 to uninsured patients.
