The Village of Bourbonnais is seeking further public input for the Riverfront Park Master Planning process. After an in-person open house that drew about 50 residents, the village has introduced an online survey to gather feedback from those who could not attend.
The survey presents information from the initial engagement round held in 2024, outlines details on a planned 6.6-acre park expansion, and discusses a grant obtained by Senator Patrick Joyce aimed at improving the outdoor area. The survey will be available until October 31, 2025, on the village’s website.
Village officials first invited residents to participate in planning Riverfront Park during a workshop in January 2024. The park, located at 1200 Canterbury Lane along the Kankakee River, has not seen significant updates for over two decades. It is now a key part of the Imagine Bourbonnais initiative, which seeks to involve community members in decisions about the village’s future development.
Kimley-Horn and Associates, a consulting firm specializing in engineering, planning, and design, is leading the master planning effort. The firm previously worked with Bourbonnais on its Wayfinding Signage Program.
“Community input is essential as we plan for the next generation of parks and open spaces,” said Mayor Jeff Keast. “This process ensures that residents’ voices help guide how parks evolve to meet the community’s needs.”
Riverfront Park is one of 24 parks managed by Bourbonnais and one of two situated along the Kankakee River. Its amenities include benches, biking and walking trails, fitness equipment, fishing access, frisbee golf facilities, a grill, a historic pavilion, picnic tables, seasonal restrooms, and a Little Free Library.
