Ascension, a prominent non-profit Catholic health system, has unveiled its first FY25 Annual Nursing Report. The report showcases the organization's commitment to its nursing workforce and outlines strategic efforts for the future.
Maureen "Mo" Chadwick, Senior Vice President, Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer of Ascension, emphasized the dedication of the nursing community. "This report is a representation of our nursing communities’ collective efforts driven by our Mission, rooted in the loving ministry of Jesus as healer," she stated.
The report highlights improvements in nurse retention rates: a 1.5% increase in 90-day retention to 88.31%, an 8% rise in one-year retention to 65.56%, and an overall five-year retention rate of 81.96%. Additionally, it details advancements in quality care with a notable reduction in patient falls and improvements in safety culture survey results.
Ascension nurses have focused on enhancing patient-centered care for older adults, leading to increased screenings following Medicare Annual Wellness Visits (AWVs). A pilot strategy with The DAISY Foundation and Qualtrics resulted in over 1,000 nominations for exceptional care.
Investment in the nursing workforce includes hiring initiatives that reduced reliance on contract labor and a reinvigorated nurse preceptor program boosting onboarding experiences. There are currently 116 active research studies led by nurses at Ascension.
Sally Deitch, Executive Vice President, Nursing and Operations Infrastructure at Ascension expressed gratitude towards the nursing community's dedication. Rob Rose has been appointed as the new Senior Vice President of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer. He aims to focus on quality improvement and support for nurses' growth.
"My strategic direction will focus on elevating our commitment to quality and safety while promoting continuous improvement," said Rob Rose.
