The Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois is set to pass through Kankakee County on Wednesday, June 19. Police officers from across the county will participate in this relay event. The Bourbonnais Police will receive the Flame of Hope and commence their part as “Guardians of the Flame” at approximately 1:00 p.m., starting from 9000N Road in Manteno and proceeding southbound on N. Convent St. (Route 45/52).

As they advance, officers will be joined by additional runners and cyclists at 5000N Rd (formerly 1 Cigna Dr.). They will continue south on N. Convent St., heading towards the Olivet Nazarene University ROTC building on S. Main St. in Bourbonnais, with an expected arrival around 3:00 p.m. The torch will then be handed over to City of Kankakee officers who will complete the final leg within Kankakee County, ending at Bird Park in Kankakee.

In total, about 3,000 officers are involved in carrying the Flame of Hope over nearly 1,500 miles, running and biking through numerous Illinois communities to reach its ultimate destination—the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games in Normal, Illinois.

“We always appreciate the community coming out and supporting us and this special cause,” said Bourbonnais Interim Police Chief Jason Sztuba. “Spectators are invited and encouraged to cheer on officers and families throughout the route.”

The Illinois Law Enforcement Torch Run organizes various annual fundraising events such as the Polar Plunge and Dunkin’ Cop on a Rooftop, which was recently held on May 16 at both Dunkin’ locations in Bourbonnais.

The Bourbonnais Police Department announced that thanks to contributions from officers and community members, they raised $9,000 for Special Olympics Illinois athletes.
