Ascension has undertaken a significant revision of its nurse preceptor training program, emphasizing the importance of continuous investment in nurse education and development. This initiative aims to create a strong network of caregivers capable of adapting to the changing demands of healthcare.
The organization acknowledges the crucial role that nurse preceptors play in supporting new graduates as they transition from students to professional nurses. This demographic often faces high turnover rates within their first year, making effective mentorship and onboarding essential.
In response to feedback from nurses new to precepting, Ascension launched an evidence-based overhaul of its previous training models. The revamped program focuses on providing more comprehensive mentorship and onboarding experiences rather than solely concentrating on bedside clinical practice.
Since January, over 3,200 nurses have completed the updated training program and become certified preceptors.
