The Village of Bourbonnais has been awarded a $110,000 member initiative grant, as announced by Senator Patrick Joyce. This development follows the donation of 6.63 acres of parkland to the village by the Johnston family. The donated land consists of three parcels adjacent to Riverfront Park, offering approximately 600 feet of river frontage.
This connection emerged from the village's 'Imagine Bourbonnais' planning process and community engagement campaign for Riverfront Park that began last year. As a result of this significant endowment, the village temporarily paused its master planning for Riverfront Park.
Bourbonnais Mayor Paul Schore expressed gratitude for the grant: "We couldn't be more thankful to receive this positive news from Senator Joyce's office," he said. He noted that collaboration with the community has led to both the land gift and now funding to enhance open spaces.
Senator Joyce stated, “Delivering results for the communities of the 40th district is a top priority for me. I’m excited to secure state funds for this project, which will enhance an already beautiful park enjoyed by residents.”
Mayor Schore also confirmed that the additional acreage would remain natural as per an agreement with the Johnston family. Walking trails connecting to Riverfront Park are under consideration, with further details pending once planning resumes.
"Residents have been a large part of the village's park planning, and we continue to welcome their input," Schore added.
Riverfront Park is located at Canterbury Lane's end and spans 13.18 acres with about 1,120 feet of river frontage. It is one of two local parks along the Kankakee River and offers both active and passive recreational activities while preserving unique landscapes.
The Village of Bourbonnais maintains over 100 acres of parkland across 24 local parks providing diverse recreational opportunities for all ages. The latest addition was a new playground at The Grove at Goselin Park, which received positive feedback from residents.
