Ascension Health, in collaboration with Dispensary of Hope, is making significant strides in providing essential medications to underserved communities. As National Pharmacist Day approaches, Ascension acknowledges the efforts of its over 3,000 pharmacy professionals who play a crucial role in patient care by ensuring access to necessary medications.
These pharmacists are integral not only in dispensing medications but also in promoting cost-effective use of prescriptions. With rising medication costs impacting patient care negatively, Ascension's pharmacy system, Ascension Rx, aims to provide personalized and confidential services. This includes home delivery and specialty outpatient pharmacy options tailored for vulnerable populations.
In partnership with Dispensary of Hope, Ascension addresses the needs of low-income and uninsured patients by offering free medications. Last year alone, Dispensary of Hope dispensed 1.2 million prescriptions to 164,000 patients across 38 states through its network of 245 dispensing sites. This initiative has been linked to a reduction in hospital stays and emergency department visits by 50 percent and 35 percent respectively.
The importance of reliable access to medications cannot be understated as it directly impacts patient health outcomes. In recognition of its impact, Dispensary of Hope received the American Pharmacists Association’s Foundation Pinnacle Award for improving patient outcomes through effective medication management.
Together with its partners and pharmacy professionals, Ascension remains committed to ensuring quality healthcare for those facing financial hardships or lacking access to affordable care.
