Ascension announces leadership changes ahead of Dr. Richard Fogel's retirement

Ascension has announced a significant leadership transition as Dr. Richard Fogel, Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, prepares to retire on June 30, 2025. Before his retirement, Dr. Fogel will assume the role of Chief Health Outcomes Officer starting January 1, 2025. In this position, he will focus on engaging with associates and the community to promote Ascension's achievements in clinical quality and safety.

Thomas Aloia, currently serving as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Ascension, will be promoted to Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer. The organization will initiate a national search for a new system Chief Medical Officer during this transition period.

Joseph Impicciche, CEO of Ascension, expressed gratitude for Dr. Fogel's contributions: “I am grateful for Dr. Fogel's incredible legacy at Ascension spanning both clinical practice and leadership.” He further acknowledged Dr. Fogel’s impact on the organization: “His inspiring leadership, tireless commitment and humble service have made Ascension a better place to give and receive care.”

Dr. Fogel reflected on his tenure at Ascension: “Throughout my time at Ascension, I have been committed to putting patient care and safety at the center of all my work.” He emphasized his continued dedication to creating a safer healthcare environment in his upcoming role.

Dr. Aloia shared his perspective on the new opportunity: "I am grateful for this opportunity to continue the important work of meeting the needs of our communities and the vulnerable populations we serve." He expressed his commitment to maintaining a culture that prioritizes safety and quality while fostering growth through innovation.

Dr. Fogel's career includes notable achievements in heart care within Indianapolis. He played key roles in The Care Group and St. Vincent Heart Center of Indiana before joining Ascension Indiana as Chief Clinical Officer in 2015.

Since becoming Executive Vice President and CCO at Ascension in 2019, Dr. Fogel has focused on enhancing clinical performance by launching initiatives like the "We’ve Got Your Back" campaign and leading the COVID-19 clinical response efforts.

Dr. Aloia joined Ascension in 2021 after working at MD Anderson Cancer Center as Professor of Surgical Oncology and Chief Value and Quality Officer. His research has contributed significantly to surgical oncology advancements.
