The Bourbonnais Police Department introduced its first canine unit during a Village of Bourbonnais Board Meeting on November 4.

Canine officer Knight, a 5-1/2-year-old Belgian Malinois, was sworn in alongside his handler, Sergeant Tim Banks. Banks has served with the Bourbonnais Department for 13 years. The ceremony occurred at the Municipal Center located at 700 Main St. NW.

According to the department, Knight and Sergeant Banks have completed extensive training and fieldwork. Knight's responsibilities will include tracking and detecting drugs and other illicit items. Additionally, he will assist in locating missing persons and apprehending suspects.

Police Chief Jim Phelps said, "our force continues to grow in diversity, and we couldn’t be prouder to welcome, Knight, to the Bourbonnais Police Department." He added that Knight "will be an exceptional tool for aiding officers in keeping village streets safe."
