JC Payne, a patient under the care of VITAS in Florida's Treasure Coast, had not been able to spend quality time with his wife for over two years due to his illness. As he neared the end of his life, he wished to create a lasting happy memory for her.
During sessions with Andrew Mee, a VITAS massage therapist, JC expressed his desire to go fishing one last time with his wife. Mee reached out to Darlene Billington, VITAS Team Manager, to make this wish possible.
VITAS supports patients by honoring their last wishes as part of providing quality end-of-life care. Their interdisciplinary teams include social workers and nurses who cater to each patient's specific needs.
Fishing had always been a passion for JC. It allowed him to bond with loved ones through an engaging activity. The challenges and rewards of fishing provided memorable experiences for him and those close to him.
JC's wife, Celie, who lives at home despite coping with paralysis, was transported by VITAS Social Worker Shekina Burson for a planned fishing trip near JC's nursing home.
On the day of the trip, JC was excited and lively. His care team knew they were in for an enjoyable time given his friendly nature. When Celie arrived in her wheelchair, JC recognized her laughter before seeing her. Their reunion was heartwarming after being apart for so long.
The couple spent the afternoon fishing, having lunch, conversing, and reminiscing with everyone present. Volunteer Services Manager Daily Martinez helped plan the trip and anticipated that fish might not bite that day. To ensure a successful photo opportunity, she bought trout from the market but JC quickly spotted the trick.
This light-hearted moment became a source of laughter for everyone involved. JC appreciated spending the day doing something he loved with the support of his VITAS team who felt grateful to share this special experience with him.
