VITAS Healthcare has taken steps to honor veterans in Brevard County by unveiling veteran walls at two local nursing facilities, Indian River Center and West Melbourne Health and Rehabilitation Center. These installations are part of VITAS's efforts to recognize the contributions of service members residing in these communities.
The veteran walls feature photographs of resident veterans and are revealed during ceremonies that include presentations of honors such as "Thank You" certificates, challenge coins, stars from American flags with a poem, and American flag pins. The events are organized by representatives from VITAS's Melbourne office.
At Indian River Center, the ceremony was attended by family members, VITAS staff, and residents. Among them was Army veteran Randall Busby, who made a significant decision to attend despite his condition. His presence was deeply meaningful for those present.
A similar event took place at West Melbourne Health and Rehabilitation Center. The ceremony began with the singing of The Star-Spangled Banner. Navy veteran Robert Thomas expressed appreciation for the recognition, stating: “It feels good to not be forgotten.”
These initiatives underscore the importance of acknowledging the sacrifices made by veterans. They serve as reminders for VITAS staff to continue creating meaningful experiences for veterans and their families.
To date, VITAS has installed veteran honor walls at 14 locations throughout Brevard County including Titusville Towers, Addington Place, Life Care Center of Melbourne, Avante, Cedar Creek, Bedrock Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Atlantic Shores, The Palms, Consulate of Melbourne, Brookshire, Viera Del Mar, VITAS Inpatient Unit in Rockledge along with Indian River Center and West Melbourne Health and Rehabilitation.
