When Nicholas Black, a 16-year-old hospice patient with VITAS in Volusia County, Florida, expressed his wish to attend a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) match in Tampa, his care team fulfilled it. Nicholas was diagnosed with Arnold-Chiari Malformation without spina bifida or hydrocephalus, conditions that left him wheelchair-bound and unable to speak or use his hands and arms. Despite these challenges, wrestling remained his favorite pastime.
Nicholas' mother shared concerns about his deteriorating health and doubted he would survive past the holiday season. Attending a wrestling match was considered his last wish. VITAS team members are dedicated to providing comfort and joy at the end of life by facilitating experiences such as attending events or virtual reality adventures.
“Honoring these special moments makes my work so rewarding,” stated Tina Ford, VITAS Volunteer Services Manager.
After Nicholas made it to Christmas with the support of his family and VITAS team, his mother requested another wish on his behalf: to receive as many Christmas cards as possible. This wish was publicized through a Facebook page created by the nonprofit organization Bianca’s Kids.
Tina Ford, along with VITAS Nurse Beverly Evans and their team, mobilized efforts within the community to fulfill this wish. “The response was so incredible that I decided to go even further,” explained Tina. She coordinated with local fire departments for card delivery. Over 2,000 Christmas cards were sent to Nicholas.
Although he could not open them himself, Nicholas’ mother read each card's message aloud at his bedside. His reaction was described as pure excitement and happiness upon seeing the outpouring of love.
“It simply warmed our hearts to grant him this,” said Tina.
Nicholas passed away exactly one month after receiving the cards. Tina believes he is now “one of the beautiful angels watching over us.”
“As volunteer service manager, I get the chance to make a difference in someone’s life,” she added. “At the end of the day, I know I’ve done something good.”
