Ascension, a prominent non-profit and Catholic health system in the United States, has joined Keep Americans Covered. This coalition consists of healthcare stakeholders focused on maintaining affordable healthcare for millions of Americans by advocating for the continuation of enhanced premium tax credits in the individual health insurance marketplace.
Joseph Impicciche, Chief Executive Officer of Ascension, stated that their mission is to "serve all persons, with special attention to the poor and vulnerable," which includes advocating for policies that ensure access to quality and affordable care. He noted that the enhanced premium support has been crucial in lowering monthly costs for 20 million Americans and their families. Without this support, many might have to choose between health insurance and basic needs such as food and utilities.
The enhanced premium tax credits were introduced under the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021 and extended in 2022. According to the American Hospital Association, these credits have helped eligible recipients save an average of 48 percent on monthly health insurance premiums. However, if they expire at the end of 2025 as planned, about four million Americans could lose their health coverage, with many more facing higher premiums.
Impicciche emphasized the need for Congress to act decisively to preserve these credits so that healthcare remains accessible and affordable. He expressed pride in Ascension's participation in Keep Americans Covered alongside a diverse group of stakeholders urging bipartisan action to extend these tax credits.
Keep Americans Covered includes organizations like AARP, American Cancer Society, BlueCross BlueShield Association, FamiliesUSA, Healthcare Leadership Council, National Rural Health Association, Susan G. Komen, Unidos US among others.
